Let’s say you’re about to walk your dog; are you excited or already stressing about what’s to come?
You clip on the lead and get yanked out the front door. It starts eagerly pulling, choking itself. The neighbour’s cat scurries across your path and your dog goes up a gear. You reach the end of the driveway and beg your dog to sit so you can open the gate. You tired yet?
There are many reasons why dogs pull – spotting other animals; sounds and scents; fast moving objects; stress; even the wrong lead, harness or collar. But the most common reason is not enough guidance.
So, how can you be the guide that your dog needs?
- Be prepared!
– Have your irresistible dog treats ready – these are one of the most effective dog training tools that they won’t be able to resist!
– Come ready with a healthy dose of patience
- Choose wisely
– Pick an area with minimal distractions. Back roads or courts are better than high traffic areas for dog obedience training.
– Fit your dogs’ collar with room for two fingers underneath – a simple, fitted flat collar, nothing fancy will do the trick.
- Less is more
– Minimise the use of vocals. Our natural tendency is to talk to dogs but stick to the few words that you’re sure your dog understands.
– Only reward – verbally or with treats – when your dog shows the behaviour you’re wanting. Unnecessary praise or treats just creates confusion.
“In my personal dog training experience, it’s crucial not to bombard your dog with too many instructions at once. Tackling one goal at a time is the key to setting them up for success!”
Ethical Dog Training is qualified to guide you in how to train your dog– with help just a click away, your dog can succeed on the lead!
