What to Know About Puppies

Bringing a puppy into your home is exciting, but it is also a time filled with learning for both you and your new dog. Puppies are curious, energetic, and constantly exploring their surroundings. One of the most important things to understand early on is that puppies are always learning as they are in their Critical Period of Development (read our blog here for more), which is why starting dog training early can make such a positive difference.

I often tell new puppy owners that patience and consistency are one of the most valuable things they can bring to the process. Puppies do not automatically understand the rules of a human household. Through consistent dog training, they slowly learn what behaviours are expected. Simple things such as learning their name, responding to cues, and understanding routines help puppies feel more confident and secure.

Toilet training is usually one of the first challenges owners face. Puppies have small bladders and are still developing control, so accidents are part of the process. I always remind owners that consistency and routine are key. Taking your puppy outside regularly and rewarding the right behaviour helps them learn quickly. With a clear routine, most puppies begin to understand where they should go to the toilet.

Have a plan and be consistent

Another important thing to know is that puppies need structure and boundaries. While their playful behaviour can be cute, jumping, chewing, and biting are natural behaviours that need guidance. Early dog training helps redirect these behaviours into more appropriate habits. I have seen many puppies develop excellent manners simply because their owners started applying boundaries early.

Living in Melbourne, puppies are often exposed to busy environments with plenty of sights, sounds, and people. Socialisation is therefore a very important part of raising a young dog. Introducing your puppy to different experiences in a positive and controlled way helps them grow into a confident adult dog. I have noticed that puppies raised by owners with a clear plan in mind, tend to cope much better with city life as they mature.

Another thing new owners should understand is that puppies need rest just as much as activity. It can be tempting to constantly play with a puppy, but they actually require a lot of sleep to support healthy development. Teaching a puppy to settle and relax is an important part of dog training and helps prevent overstimulation.

Many people begin their journey by searching online for “dog training near me” once they realise how much guidance puppies need. Seeking support early can make the experience far more enjoyable for both the owner and the puppy. If you are raising a puppy in Melbourne, having access to professional guidance and reliable information can be incredibly helpful.

For those looking to build a strong foundation with their puppy, you can learn more about puppy training classes through Ethical Dog Training. It can also be helpful to connect with trusted local pet businesses for supplies and advice. For example, Animal World of Boronia provides a range of products that can help support your puppy’s early development.

In my experience, the puppy stage is both rewarding and demanding, but it is also one of the most important times in a dog’s life. With patience, guidance, and consistent dog training, puppies can grow into well-behaved, confident companions that bring joy to their families for many years.
